It is possible to configure BCS to provide the necessary support to all sizes and types of manufacturers. The first step involved is to implement Work Orders and Assemblies module. This feature when enabled allows users to clearly define the assembly items, to generate work orders, develop complex multi-level materials bill, backflush components using very less effort and record assembly builds.

The manufactured item which consumes other components which are part of the process, in BCS is termed as Assembly Item. It is defined via New Items menu. Optionally, the Assembly Items could be defined as serialized or lot numbered. In case, full traceability is desired by the product from the used component, their source, origin and designation, then any of the options can be selected to ensure strict maintenance of traceability.

Work Order generation in BCS is considered to be an optional step within the manufacturing procedure. But, if the capacity to communicate effectively to production is desired as to what is required, when and the components to be used or if a configurable product is sold, where options and features are present, then it is critical to generate a work order, regarded to be a part of the procedure. Here, the work order is stated to be the initial point to implement the production management system.

It is a printable document, given to the production for communication of production plan. They can also use the document to communicate back with regards to the amount of raw material consumed precisely when compared to expected amount.

The assembly item can be added with instructional files and flagged to print like the traveler. This way, the production team is provided with quick and easy method to derive additional information.

BCS, with the creation of Work Order commits inventory automatically to production, on generation of the work order, thereby providing accurate view of existing inventory status.

This transaction is considered to be the point where there is consumed components and creation of finished goods is done, at times termed as ‘backflushing’. It is possible to complete Assembly Build either directly from the menu in case, functioning in work order-less or lean environment or against the work order.
